As part of this year's National Apprenticeship Week celebrations, Work Ealing hosted an online webinar on careers in construction. You can watch a recording of it to get an insight into the construction industry and hear the experience of two apprentices, who also answered questions.

Construction and employability programme

ConnecMe2 offers free construction and employability programmes to young people aged 16-24. The programme can help you:

  • Gain a qualification in health and safety in a construction environment.
  • Learn about the various trades and what it takes to get in the construction industry.
  • Prepare you for your CSCS green card test, which will be paid for.
  • Get employment ready.

To be eligible for the programme, you must be:

  • Aged 16-24.
  • Not in education, employment or training.
  • Able to show proof of ID and address.

Fast-track your career in construction with a skills bootcamp

Are you aged 19 and over and looking to change sectors or progress in your career? Consider a skills bootcamp in construction, a free programme to help you build sector-specific skills with a guaranteed job interview at the end of the course. The duration of the programme is four weeks for unemployed people and one day a week over 12 weeks for those who are employed.

The Regal London Real Estate Academy

A fully funded course by the charity Building Heroes for anyone, including veterans, military family members, reservists over 19 who wants to find employment in the construction industry - brickwork, plastering, plumbing, carpentry, joinery, tiling painting and decorating and general maintenance.

Pre-employability programmes

The Skills Centre offers free construction pre-employability programmes for those on Universal Credit or earning below £17,000 per year.

Whether you have previously worked in the industry without a green labourer CSCS card or you have had one but need to renew it, choose from one or three-week programmes. Learn about health and safety and gain construction and sustainability knowledge to get into construction.

Taking care of your mental health

You can call the construction industry helpline on 0345 605 1956 for practical, emotional and financial support for yourself or your family, when in crisis. It’s open 24 hours 7 days a week and it’s run by Lighthouse, the construction industry charity club.

You can also download the Construction industry helpline mobile app on the App store or Google Play. The app is free and provides vital information, advice and guidance on many wellbeing topics, including stress, anxiety, depression, anger and suicidal thoughts.
